Nepal has launched a district-wide vaccination campaign in Myagdi to protect adolescent girls from cervical cancer through the administration of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, targeting a total of 923 girls.
According to the Public Health Office, Myagdi, the campaign will cover girls studying in Grade 6 across 158 schools in all 48 wards of the district, along with out-of-school girls aged 10 years. The initiative is part of Nepal’s broader efforts to reduce cervical cancer through preventive healthcare.
The vaccination drive is scheduled to take place from Magh 27 to Falgun 4. Health authorities have confirmed that the HPV vaccine is safe and effective. Bhuvan Thakuraathi, Chief of the Public Health Office in Myagdi, has urged parents and guardians to participate without hesitation, emphasizing the vaccine’s role in long-term cancer prevention.
Vaccination centers will be established within both private and community schools for school-going girls. The campaign will also include girls studying in Grades 9 and 10 who missed vaccination in the previous year, as well as out-of-school girls aged 11 to 14 years, ensuring broader coverage.
As per the official schedule, vaccinations will be conducted in Beni Municipality and Annapurna Rural Municipality on Magh 27, Mangala, Malika, and Dhaulagiri Rural Municipalities on Magh 28, and Raghuganga Rural Municipality on Falgun 4 and 5.
District-wise targets indicate that 334 girls in Beni, 112 in Mangala, 178 in Malika, 141 in Dhaulagiri, 91 in Raghuganga, and 67 in Annapurna Rural Municipality will receive the HPV vaccine. Additionally, out-of-school girls aged 20 years and four girls who missed vaccination last year have also been included in the campaign.
To ensure effective implementation, the Health Office has mobilized 107 health workers and an equal number of volunteers, according to Information Officer Ganesh Subedi.
Health officials believe the campaign will play a crucial role in reducing cervical cancer risks and strengthening preventive healthcare services in the district.
